When To Book Your Newborn Session

Most often, I get asked, “when should I plan to schedule my newborn session?” Well, the answer varies based on a few factors. Read on to learn more…

One of the things to take into consideration when inquiring about booking your little one’s session is how far along you are. Did you just find out the exciting news? Are you about to have the baby any day? Is your little one already here?
Ideally, I recommend reaching out about booking your newborn session early into your second trimester. Because I only take a limited number of newborns per month (approximately 6), it is a good idea to contact me as early on as you’re comfortable doing so. That way, I can be sure that I have availability around your due date, or provide enough time for you to find another available photographer, if I’m already booked up. Many times I have had potential clients reach out after the baby has already been born, and sadly, I cannot always guarantee availability in such a short time frame.

Upon scheduling your session, I will add your due date to the calendar to reserve your spot. Since I only book a handful of newborns per month, this leaves room in my schedule to adjust the actual session date based on your little one’s arrival. Once the baby is here, plan on reaching out to me to let me know. I will then send you a list of weekday dates that I have available.

I am always flexible on timing for the actual session. I typically like to photograph newborns within the first 2 weeks after they’re born, however, I understand that things come up, or that you’re unable to come in within the 2 week time frame. That’s okay! I have had plenty of successful newborn sessions with babies 3 weeks old and beyond.

If your baby is older than 5 weeks, I also offer the option of booking a wrapped newborn mini session. Wrapped mini sessions are a shorter version of a standard newborn session, and are ideal for older babies who are more alert. During this session, your baby will stay swaddled, using a variety of colors, poses, props, and sets, for plenty of variety. The swaddles will help keep your little one calm and content, even if they are awake and alert. You can find more information on the newborn mini session here.
